Scaling and Root Planing
What Is Scaling & Root Planing?
Scaling & Root Planing is a common non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease. Often referred to as a “deep cleaning,” it involves removing plaque and tartar from below the gum line and smoothing the tooth roots to prevent bacteria from collecting. This creates a clean surface that encourages the gums to reattach and heal naturally. When performed by a periodontist, this procedure can often control the disease without the need for surgery, especially when paired with regular dental visits and good oral hygiene at home.
Periodontal Pockets
Excess tartar buildup beneath the gums can lead to the formation of pockets around the teeth, making them more vulnerable to infection and bone loss. During routine exams, we measure these pockets—depths of 3 mm or less are considered healthy, while deeper pockets may indicate gum disease. When pockets exceed 3 mm, we often recommend scaling and root planing to reduce inflammation, close the pockets, and protect your long-term oral health.
Gingivitis and Gum Disease
Gum disease affects nearly half of adults over 30, often starting as gingivitis—a mild form that doesn’t cause pain but can lead to bleeding gums and inflammation if left untreated. It’s usually caused by poor brushing or flossing habits that allow plaque to build up and harden into tartar. While plaque can be removed at home, tartar requires professional cleaning to prevent damage to the gums and enamel.
Some people may be more prone to gum disease due to genetics or hormonal changes. For example, menstruating or pregnant women can develop hormonal gingivitis, making it especially important to maintain good oral care during these times.
